The effects of three organic mulches on selected soil biological, physical and chemical properties were measured on a Wakanui silt loam soil under an organically managed apple orchard. The three mulch treatments were a mixed herbal ley, a Lincoln compost, and Bio-blend, a commercially available mulch. These mulches have been applied annually since 1989.
Earthworm population and microbial biomass were highest in the mineral soil under the herbal ley mulch. Allolobophora caliginosa was the most prevalent earthworm species. Mineralisable-N was directly related to earthworm population and microbial biomass. All mulch treatments displayed high aggregate stability, hydraulic conductivity and nutrient levels.
In comparison to the other organic mulches, Bio-blend had a less beneficial effect on the soil properties measured.
